Learning Guide: Facebook

Learning Guide: Facebook

Describe the Tool- Facebook is a social media tool that allows users to create a personal profile with various details, add other users as friends, exchange messages and photos, join or ‘like” common interest user groups, and post messages to the boards of those groups (Callaghan & Fribbance, 2016). In addition, each user has a news feed with updates of posts from friends and liked pages. Although, Facebook is more commonly used for personal use (1.49 billion users), Facebook can be used as a collaboration tool for learning and development.

Effective Instruction- Facebook has the potential to help learners obtain information from instructors by joining groups that correspond with courses. Instructors thus have the ability to post information within the groups, share content, and allows students to interact using a social media application. Additionally, Facebook is a good platform to have discussions and create active learning communities especially for distance learning students. An example of instruction is posting an article relating to the organizations diversity policy and encouraging employees to share their thoughts about diversity in the workplace.

Strategies for Integration- A method to encourage integrating Facebook as a learning platform, is posting articles on subjects that relate to company events, announcements, policy changes, and open public forums. Therefore, Facebook has the ability to reach the public as well as employees or students. Facebook can also be used to post company news thus, assigning an employee (maybe from the marketing department) to run the page in order to communicate the messages are in the best interest of the organization. Over the last decade, social media has played a key factor in marketing. Social media (unlike print) can reach a high variety of individuals, used to enhance popularity, facilitate word-of-mouth communication, increase sales, and generate social support for consumers (Hajli, 2014).

How to Get Started- In order to us Facebook, the user will need to create a page that targets to learners, groups, or consumers. Here are some steps that one can use to get started.
·         Create a Facebook profile
·         For a business or organization (group) select local business, company, or organization
·         Pick the right profile picture that tells viewers the story of your page in a visual way
·         Fill out the “About” section and include the organizations overview, description, goals, and mission statement
·         Make posts
·         Share posts with friends co-workers, friends, and connect with other businesses
·         Keep the page active and current. As mentioned earlier, assigning someone to facilitate the page internally will insure that content is ongoing.
