Learning Guide: Video Conferencing
Learning Guide: Video Conferencing
Describe the Tool-
Video conferencing is a live visual connection between two or more people residing
in different locations for communicating. Therefore, video conferencing is a
solution to not being able to meet face-to-face. As a business purpose, video
conferencing can provide meetings that are more effective to include
training/instruction, improve communication, and reduce travel costs. According
to Slovak (2007), one of the advantages to video conferencing compared to audio
only communication (conference call) is the learner is able to view the people
as if they are talking to them in person. Furthermore, they are able to view
facial and non-verbal expressions.
Effective Instruction-
Instructors are able to provide training to individuals while seeing them in
real time, evaluate engagement, and collaborate on variety of topics. In order
to achieve high productivity, instructors should create an agenda that allows
for streamlined and effective learning. However, video concerning can also be
utilized for employee check-ins, brainstorming, and training/development
planning. An example of using this technology for instruction is using this
service to implement and discuss new changes into an organization without
having to spend the time and resources of travel. The meeting can be held, and
then employees are able to get back to day-today tasks immediately afterwards.
Another example, if a leader wants to present data to their team, they are able
to use video conferencing to show data while having a real time visual
discussion.
Strategies for
Integration- Video conferencing is easily accessible with the technology
such as FaceTime or Skype. However, organizations have the option of utilizing
advanced systems such as Cisco Systems, Go to Meeting, Zoom, and Logitech. Therefore,
video conferencing can be used formally and informally depending on the current
need. In addition, with the advancements of mobile technology, we are able to
use this tool with our phones thus; we are able to do impromptu collaboration
at any time. Organizations should integrate video conferencing for the
following reasons:
·
Video conferencing is more engaging than audio
conferencing
·
Video conferencing is as good as being there in
person
·
Video conferencing enables superior learning and
communication
·
Video conferencing keeps dispersed teams
connected and aligned
How to Get Started-
In order to get started and integrate video conferencing into their organization
it is best to reach out to companies that offer this service. They are able to
inform managers of their technology, provide a quote, and come out to install
the video conferencing systems. Due to the advances in high-speed internet,
video conferencing becomes a great business tool that allows organizations to
focus on teamwork, communication, presentations, and cost effective solutions
to travel. Organizations who use video conferencing will not only see the
organizational benefits, but also the benefits to their employee’s quality of
life. Video conferencing can lead to higher job satisfaction and loyalty to
employers as well as less stress and improved work-family balance (Douglas,
Lubbe & Rotelli, 2013).
