Learning Guide: Podcast

Podcasts were created so that individuals can share similar ideas, thoughts, theories, research, and instruction to people with similar interests. A podcast can be accessed at any time and allow students to be flexible in their learning through audio that has been previously recorded. According to Hope (2018), podcasts have been used in the classroom to deliver lessons, give students hand-on learning experience with technology, and provide additional material to students to download and review on their own time.

Effective Instruction – Inclusion of audio podcasts as a teaching aid for students can serve as a useful supplement to make reviewing more convenient and enhance understanding and recall subject material (Kalludi, 2013). In addition, the versatility, intimacy, and ease of production enables technology to assist our learning thus, making learning more accessible to learners. An example of podcasts in today’s technological world is providing access to student lectures (from professors) through audio recordings. This is especially helpful for students who are learning through e-learning education. Finally, podcasts are not only useful to students; they can be used for research, instruction, political commentary, and news stories.

Strategies for Integration and How to Get Started – As instructors recognize the usefulness of podcasts (audio learning), they are able to use Web 3.0 tools to incorporate new practices of instruction. In order to get started and integrate strategies, Hope (2018) gives us a resource guide of creating and engaging effective podcasts. The following six steps will give instructors starting points:

1.      Identify topics by brainstorming – instructor can identify what topics to share through their audio file podcast.
2.      Challenge students to think outside the box – instructors should challenge their students to use new technology in the classroom.
3.      Find the right platform.
4.      Write the story before recording the podcast – this will help insure that the content is edited, researched, and ready for production.
5.      Tailor the podcast to the audience.
6.      Remind students to appeal to the “ear” – remind students to switch their learning styles in a way that appeals to the ear rather than visually (videos).
